Can Compostable Packaging Save the Planet?

At Door County Cannabis Co., we believe in the power of mindful wellness and the importance of sustainability. Our commitment to the environment is reflected not only in growing hemp at Gray-Aire Farms but also in the compostable packaging we use for our hemp-derived products by teaming up with Wildkind Packaging to bring home compostable, child-resistant packaging to the hemp industry.

The Problem with Packaging Waste

The environmental impact of traditional packaging is immense. Most plastic packaging is single-use and not properly recycled, contributing to significant pollution. Globally, 9.2 billion tons of plastic have been produced, but only 9 percent of this has been recycled properly. The majority of plastic waste ends up in landfills or is discarded in natural environments, affecting wildlife and human health as it breaks down into microplastics that infiltrate our food and water systems (EDF Supply Chain Solutions Center) (Seven in the Ocean).

The hemp and cannabis industry often relies on cheap, plastic packaging from overseas. We know we can do better.

The Journey to Compostability

One of the key aspects of our compostable packaging is its compostability. Unlike conventional plastics, which can take hundreds of years to break down, our compostable materials are designed to degrade much faster. Our packaging is crafted from a unique blend of plant-based and sustainably sourced materials, including beetroot, cassava, corn, and wood pulp. This innovative combination ensures that every component of our packaging is eco-friendly and responsibly produced.

Key Features:

  • Materials: Plant-based and sustainably sourced.
  • Certifications: TUV certified and meets ASTM D6400 standards.
  • Decomposition Time: ~180 days in home compost, ~90 days in industrial compost.

For the composting process to begin, our materials require oxygen, moisture, and microorganisms, ensuring they won’t start degrading until they are in the right composting conditions (EDF Business).

A Commitment to Quality and Sustainability

Our commitment to sustainability does not compromise the quality of our products. Our compostable packaging materials are designed to protect our gummies, ensuring they remain fresh and effective for your wellness needs. We understand that packaging plays a crucial role in preserving the quality of our products, and we’ve chosen materials that strike the perfect balance between sustainability and functionality. Our packaging is also proudly made in Austin, TX.

Why It Matters

Choosing compostable packaging is just one of the ways we’re working to reduce our environmental footprint. By opting for plant-based, sustainably sourced materials, we’re not only supporting a healthier planet but also setting a standard for responsible business practices in the cannabis and hemp industry. Reducing packaging waste is crucial for conserving resources, decreasing pollution, and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions (EDF Supply Chain Solutions Center) (Aspen Public Radio).
