A Journey Through Hemp Cultivation at Gray-Aire Farms
From Dairy Legacy to Agricultural Innovation
Gray-Aire Farms, located in the picturesque heart of Door County, carries a history that stretches back to the early 1900s. Initially a dairy farm, the property has evolved alongside changing times and opportunities. Today, Gray-Aire Farms exemplifies a commitment to sustainable agriculture and diversification, hosting ventures like cozy Airbnb accommodations and hemp cultivation. Here’s a closer look at our journey into hemp farming.
2019: Our First Hemp Harvest
Field Location: N45.08169 W-87.14331
2019 marked a significant milestone with our first hemp crop. Growing hemp in Door County brought a fresh perspective to a region dominated by traditional crops like corn and alfalfa. We selected the resilient Abacus strain, chosen for its adaptability to varying climates and soils. While the growing season posed challenges, our farming heritage and well-maintained resources—like composted mulch and innovative planting techniques—set the foundation for success.
The inaugural harvest yielded 2,320 lbs of carefully processed hemp flower and leaves. These were used to create high-quality extracts that highlight the potential of Door County agriculture.
2020: Sustainable Expansion
Field Location: N45.07957 W-87.14092
In 2020, Gray-Aire Farms expanded its hemp cultivation to approximately three acres. This expansion featured the introduction of biodegradable paper mulch to align with our commitment to environmental stewardship. Efficiency also improved with a specialized transplanter for planting 8,000 hemp plants. The harvest was processed using modern techniques, demonstrating our dedication to sustainable and innovative farming.
2021: Building Collaborations
Field Location: N45.07889 W-87.14105
In 2021, Gray-Aire Farms allocated 0.75 acres to the Midwest Hemp Database initiative, contributing to collective research and development in hemp cultivation. This collaborative approach showcases our ongoing efforts to be part of a broader agricultural community.
