Can Compostable Packaging Save the Planet?

At Door County Cannabis Co., sustainability and mindful practices are at the heart of what we do. From growing hemp at Gray-Aire Farms to using innovative, compostable packaging, we’re committed to reducing environmental impact. By partnering with Wildkind Packaging, we’ve introduced home-compostable, child-resistant packaging to the hemp industry, setting a new standard for responsible practices.

The Problem with Packaging Waste

Traditional packaging creates significant environmental challenges. Most plastic packaging is single-use and often improperly recycled, leading to pollution on a global scale. Shockingly, only 9% of the 9.2 billion tons of plastic produced worldwide has been recycled. The remainder accumulates in landfills or natural environments, breaking down into microplastics that pollute ecosystems, including our food and water systems (EDF Supply Chain Solutions Center) (Seven in the Ocean).

In the hemp and cannabis industries, plastic packaging is often sourced cheaply from overseas. At Door County Cannabis Co., we believe there’s a better way.

The Journey to Compostability

Our compostable packaging is designed with the environment in mind. Unlike conventional plastics, which can take hundreds of years to decompose, our materials are crafted to break down much faster under composting conditions. Made from sustainably sourced, plant-based materials like beetroot, cassava, corn, and wood pulp, our packaging is both eco-friendly and durable.

Key Features:

  • Materials: Plant-based and sustainably sourced.
  • Certifications: TUV certified and ASTM D6400 compliant.
  • Decomposition Time: ~180 days in home compost and ~90 days in industrial compost.

These materials remain stable during use and only begin degrading when exposed to oxygen, moisture, and microorganisms under composting conditions. (EDF Business).

Balancing Quality and Sustainability

Sustainability doesn’t mean compromising on quality. Our packaging is designed to protect the freshness of our products while maintaining environmental responsibility. Proudly produced in Austin, TX, these materials balance functionality and eco-consciousness.

Why Compostable Packaging Matters

Choosing compostable packaging reduces environmental impact and promotes responsible business practices. By replacing traditional plastics with plant-based materials, we’re conserving resources, decreasing pollution, and contributing to a healthier planet.

Switching to sustainable packaging isn’t just about environmental benefits; it’s about inspiring change within the hemp and cannabis industries, demonstrating that eco-friendly solutions are possible and effective. (EDF Supply Chain Solutions Center) (Aspen Public Radio).
